Tai Chi is a sequence of slow and continuous movements, which take about twenty minutes to complete. It requires concentration rather than strength, an yet it enables the practitioner to acquire an intrinsic power referred to as ‘Chi’, which is deeply rooted and flows unobstructed throughout the body via energy channels, known as meridians. Tai Chi is not only a martial art, but also a form of moving meditation.
It is said that Chang San Feng, who was a Taoist monk created Tai Chi according to the Yin and Yang theory over a thousand years ago. In the philosophy of Taoism, Yang represents firmness, activity and brightness. Yin, on the other hand, means softness, righteousness, inactivity and darkness. Tai Chi is the embodiment of both of these elements.
The practice of Tai Chi enables one to experience stillness within movement and movement within stillness, helping one to remain calm in adversity. It teaches people how to remain conscious of their actions and remain in control.
It is an excellent exercise, beneficial both to one’s physical and mental health. The movements of Tai Chi Chuan are circular, gentle, flowing and relaxed. It is suitable for people of all ages.
Tai Chi and Qi Gong produce:
- Better health and relaxation
- Self-fulfilment
- Energy (intrinsic energy)
- Meditative states
The Tai Chi Chuan practiced at the Wirral Multicultural Centre is the traditional Yang-style large-frame form devised by Yang Lu Chan’s grandson Yang Cheng Fu a hundred years ago. We also practise Tai Chi Qi Gong exercises, which are breathing exercises that produce a similar effect to acupuncture.
